Be a Recycling Hero: Help RFES Reach Its 1,000-Pound Plastic Challenge!

We are excited to announce that RFES has partnered with Trex to make a positive impact on our environment. Our mission? To collect and recycle 1,000 lbs of plastic this school year, helping reduce waste in our landfills and transforming the recycled materials into valuable building products made by Trex. Let’s work together to reach our goal and make our school and community greener!

What Can Be Recycled?

Your household plastic waste can make a big difference! Here are the types of plastic we’re collecting for the NexTrex Recycling Challenge. Please ensure that all items are clean, dry, and free from food residue.

• Grocery/shopping bags
• Bread bags
• Bubble wrap
• Dry cleaning bags
• Newspaper sleeves
• Ice bags
• Plastic shipping envelopes
• Ziploc and other resealable food storage bags
• Cereal bags
• Plastic wrap from cases of water bottles and other beverages
• Salt bags
• Pallet wrap and stretch film
• Wood pellet bags
• Produce bags

How to Participate

You can bring your materials to school and donate them via the bin in the lobby, or you can follow these simple steps to contribute to our recycling challenge outside of the school day:

1. Collect: Gather your recyclable plastic materials at home.
2. Weigh: Use a kitchen scale to weigh your materials (use ounces and pounds). You may need to do this in smaller batches.
3. Drop Off: Visit one of the designated drop-off locations listed below. Stores prefer smaller, more frequent drop-offs, so please contact them in advance for larger quantities.
4. Capture: Take a landscape photo of your student with the materials at the drop-off point.
5. Report: Email the total weight (in pounds), the drop-off location, and the photo to Mrs. Seyler at Amber.SeylerVyskocil@hcps.org.

Volunteers Needed

Mrs. Seyler is also in need of parent volunteers to help her take plastic donated at school to the retail drop-off locations above. The donated plastic piles up quickly in her storage room, and getting the plastic to the drop-off locations is a huge help! If you can assist with the transportation of donated plastic, please reach out to her at Amber.SeylerVyskocil@hcps.org.
